Symposium Series No.8 – Neil Pike of Limefinger Wines

Neil Pike is one of my wine heroes.
I was a long-time supporter of the wines made under his stewardship at Pikes. His Rieslings in particular, always thrilled me.
Neil has always been most generous with sharing his knowledge. My understanding of Riesling, it’s purity, acid excitement and its ability to evolve over many decades has been shaped by long conversations, with or without a bottle on the table between us.
Back in 2017, I was thrilled at Neil’s suggestion that we craft a wine together, that he saw it as an opportunity to explore winemaking options beyond those which defined his Riesling projects at Pikes. So ‘Urth’ was born. It has become a wine that symbolises the collaborative spirit of Otherness and has provided pleasure to many of my customers since the first 2018 release.
Although Neil is no longer at Pikes and semi-retired, he hasn’t been able to help himself and continues to fashion amazing dry Rieslings from Watervale and Polish Hill River under his Limefinger label each year.
Securing his services to host an Otherness Wine Symposium represents a rare opportunity to hear Neil talk Riesling, winemaking and a lifetime of dedication to this most expressive varietal and to the Clare Valley. Neil has said that his public appearances are behind him, but I am gratified that he so willingly agreed to further our knowledge and understanding one last time.
During this tasting we will be looking at Neil’s Limefinger wines as well as the first two Otherness Urth Rieslings. You will hear stories about the winemaking and about how our friendship and shared enthusiasm resulted in wines that have captivated so many.
The Neil Pike Symposium will be enhanced by a musical contribution from his lovely wife AJ who will sing a few numbers for those who attend.
